Internet applications and telemedicine in ophthalmology

Kuchenbecker J.

Department of Ophthalmology, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Leipziger Straße 44, D-39120 Magdeburg, Germany

New communication technologies are increasingly used in ophthalmology. Computer networks between doctors and patients, practices and hospitals as well as out- and in-patient departments expands more and more. New possibilities of cooperation and eye care are results of this development. Pilot-projects are for example: the teleophthalmological expert consultation, the screening and monitoring of patients with glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, slit-lamp, fundus and strabismus examinations by telemedicine, screening tests of visual function using the internet and the use of internet technologies for data acquisition in large trials in ophthalmology. Based on these examples, options and limits, risks and chances as well as the practical realization and the reliability of these new technologies are described. The use of internet applications and telemedicine in ophthalmology is still in beginning at present. Many scientific, health-economic and legal questions must be clarified, before an extensive use of internet applications and telemedicine is possible.
