Purpose: To evaluate the anterior subcapsular opacification after implantation of implantable contact lenses (ICLs) in phakic eyes.
Methods: 75 phakic eyes of 45 patients (aged 18.7 to 60.6 years) received implantable Staar contact lenses (41 myopic patients, n=68; 5 hyperopic patients, n=10). Eight different ICL designs were used in this series. Best corrected visual acuity was assessed preoperatively and 3 months, 6 months and after the first postoperative year . Incidence of lens opacification was recorded.
Results: Preoperative spherical aequivalent was - 15.96 ± 5.29 D for myopic eyes and + 7.88 ± 1.53 D for hyperopic eyes. BCVA was Snellen 0.53 ± 0.27 preoperatively, 0.64 after 1 month, 0.68 after 3 months, 0.68 after 6 months and 0.70 after 1 year. The incidence of cataract formation occurred after 1 month in 8 of 75 eyes, after 3 months in 12 of 75 eyes, after 6 months in 17 of 75 eyes and after 1 year in 20 of 61 eyes. In 8 cases (13.1%) cataract surgery, ICL explantation and IOL implantation had to be performed.
Conclusion: The potential risk of cataract formation after ICL implantaion must be part of indictaion for treatment of myopia.
