Long term results of external and internal approaches to foreign body removal

Purpose: to analyze postoperative results and complications of external and internal approaches to foreign body removal.
Methods: 46 patients with foreign body in posterior vitreus was examined 1 year after surgery. In 26 cases was perform intravitreal approach, 20 cases - external approach ( localization with indirect ophthalmoscop, external magnet + local silicone sponge or prophylactic encircling band).
Results: In group with intravitreal approach mean visual acuity 1 year after surgery 0,18 , in 7 cases - retinal detachment, mean Nr. of reoperation - 0,38, in group with external approach mean visual acuity 1 year after surgery 0,29, in 4 cases retinal detachment, in 3 cases endophthalmitis, Nr. of reoperation 0,46.
Conclusion: 1. Results in cases with foreign body mainly depend on the localization of the foreign body. 2. External removal remains a good primary procedure in patients with clear media.
