The Influence of Healon5® versus Viscoat® on the Endothelial Cell Count after Cataract Surgery.

Department of Ophthalmology Charité, Humboldt-University Berlin, Germany

Objective: Ocular viscoelastic devices (OVDs) are well established in cataract surgery. Aim of this open prospective randomized patient and observer masked study was to compare the effect of Healon5®, a new highly viscous OVD, and Viscoat® on postoperative endothelial cell loss, intraocular pressure (IOP) and laser flare.
Methods: 63 eyes of 63 patients undergoing routine phacoemulsification followed by foldable IOL implantation were enrolled. Either Healon5® or Viscoat® that tend to remain in the anterior segment during the process of phacoemulsification was used according to a block-randomization scheme. Endothelial cell counts were compared pre- and 3 months postoperatively. IOP and laser flare measurements were taken 5 and 24 hours postoperatively.
Results: Endothelial cell loss differed between the two groups with a relative change in endothelial cell density after 3 months: -4,1% for the Healon5® group and -11,4% for the Viscoat® group. IOP and laser flare values were not statistically significantly different.
Conclusion: Healon5® showed compared to Viscoat less endothelial cell loss and seems to have protective properties for the corneal epithelium.
