Zentrum der Augenheilkunde, Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität, Theodor-Stern-Kai 7, D-60590 Frankfurt am Main

Objective: Aim of the study was to compare acoustical and optical biometry for IOL calculation.
Methods: So far we included 30 phacoemulsification cases performed by one surgeon and the data (axial length / radius of corneal curvature) for the calculation formula (Holladay II) were assessed in the following way:
(1) acoustic axial length measurement with automatic keratometry
(2) acoustic axial length measurement with manual keratometry
(3) optic axial length measurement with automaticl keratometry
(4) optic axial length measurement with manual keratometry.
The spherical equivalent (SE) of postoperative refraction was compared with the predicted refraction (appr. -0,5 diopter).
Results: The difference of real and predicted refraction (SE) was 0.06 (±0.90) in the first group, 0.06 (±0.73) in the second group, 0.02 (±0.94) for the third group and 0.13 (±0.57) for group four.
Conclusion: By now there is no difference detectable for acoustical and optical biometry.
