| Surgical decompression in branch retinal vein occlusion Mester U., Löw M., Dillinger P. Department of Ophthalmology, Bundesknappschaft´s Hospital Sulzbach, An der Klinik 10, D-66280 Sulzbach The characteristics of BRVO and its late complications as persistent
macular edema and neovascularisation are demonstrated. Due to a common
adventitial sheath, the vein can be compressed by an overlying artery
at the site of an arteriovenous crossing. This pathomechanism leading
to BRVO is shown schematically. Separation of the crossing artery from
the compressed vein by dissection of the adventitial sheath is the logical
therapeutic consequence. The surgical technique is demonstrated in two
cases, in the second case with additional preparation of the altered internal
limiting membrane. Functional results in 37 cases are shown and compared
to a control group. Typical pre- and postoperative findings in Fluorescein
angiography and Multifocal ERG are presented. |
