The Retinal Camera - new aspects of a well-known device

1Nagel E., 2Vilser W., 3Riemer T., 3Münch C., 2Tornow R.

1Private ophthalmic practice Rudolstadt, 2Technical University Ilmenau, 3IMEDOS GmbH Weimar

Purpose: To expand the using possibilities of retinal cameras for diagnostic and documentation by optional hard- and software tools.
Methods: The imaging system Visualis (IMEDOS GmbH Weimar) and a retinal camera FF 450 (Zeiss Germany) were combined with additional optical filters and various CCD- matrices. The digital images were optimized and analysed by special software for ophthalmic images.
Results: There were given examples of following applications: 1. subretinal image in the near infrared wavelength (retinal pigment epithelium, choroidal structures - vasosclerosis?) 2. autofluorescence images of the retina in combination with subretinal images to document dry AMD. 3. digital subtraction of images to compare fluorescein leakage before and after PDT or Argon-Laser-coagulation of the wet AMD.4. automatical analysis of the diameter of retinal vessel segments in single images.
Conclusion: Additional tools for the retinal camera are an interesting and low cost alternative to scanning laser systems with various wavelengths. The value of spectral images for differential diagnosis and prognosis of dry AMD should be examined.
