Histiocytosis X of the Corneoscleralen Limbus

Background: The Langerhans-Cell-Histiozytosis in the form of an
ocular manifestation like a granuloma of the conjunctiva is described
in the literature in only a few patients.
Material and method: A 27-year-old man presented in April 2000
with a yellow solid tumor at the limbus of his right eye. We performed
an excision of the tumor and a histopathological examination was carried
out.
Results: The ultrasonography examination before excision showed
a middlereflective lesion with a hight of 2.4 mm. The histological and
immunhistochemical diagnosis appeared amazingly a Langerhans-Zell- Histiozytosis
with the typical eosinophilic granulocytes with positive tests for S 100
and CD 68 and a low rate of proliferation in Ki67- colouring. An extraocular
manifestation was not found.
Conclusion: The Histiozytosis of the corneoscleral limbus is a
rare diagnosis. The majority of previously reported cases showed a recurrence
of the tumor after local excision. In the case of unsuccessful therapy
a lamellar graft is recommended.
