PCO development in the single-piece Alcon AcrySof® lens SA-30AL: one year data

Purpose: The aim of this multicenter study was to evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in the new single-piece AcrySof® IOL SA30AL. Cumulated 1 year data will be presented.
Patients & Methods: In a retrospective randomised study, until now 47 lenses of 47 patients were included in three study centres. The new Alcon AcrySof lens SA30AL shows design modifications: one piece 5.5 optic with a posterior sharp edge. Digital grey-scaled PCO images were obtained using the same Zeiss slit-lamp in all centres. Follow-up time was 3, and 6 and 12 months postoperatively. PCO was evaluated by the London System (POCO) of David Spalton. This computerised system performs a luminance comparison of adjacent pixels within capsulorhexis. PCO values might range from 0% to 100% PCO.
Results: In the POCO the SA30AL shows after 3 months 10.9% (SD 10.5%, median 5.8%) after 6 months 9.9% (SD 12.4%, median 4.6%) PCO. After 12 months the software rendered 15.2% PCO (SD 14.9%, median 11.1%). There was no capsular shrinkage but two stronger anterior capsular fibrosis.
Conclusion: PCO development of the SA30AL compares well to other AcrySof IOLs (e.g. MA30BA).The new SA30AL one-piece IOL shows low opacification and good performance for the surgeon.
