Objective: To investigate accuracy of prediction of three different biometric methods for calculation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses.
Methods: In 63 consecutive patients who underwent extracapsular cataract-extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation the refractive results at the first day (REF1) and 6 weeks (REF2) after the operation were compared with the calculated refraction of three biometric methods: Karl Zeiss IOL-Master 99 (IOL), Biovision Echograph Class 1 - Type B (BIO) and Allergan Humphrey Ultrasonic Biometer Mod 820 (HMP). Analysis of variance was used for statistical calculation.
Results: All calculated refractive values (IOL = -0.39 ± 0.89 dpt ; BIO = - 0.72 ± 0.72 dpt ; HMP = -0.37 ± 0.96 dpt) were lower than the refraction at the first postoperative day (REF1 = -0.13 ± 1.49 dpt) and six weeks after surgery (REF2 = -0.13 ± 1.19 dpt). Performing analysis of variance the coefficient of determination was calculated for the comparison between REF1 and IOL (R2 = 0.42), REF2 and IOL (R2 = 0.56), REF1 and BIO (R2 = 0.27), REF2 and BIO (R2 = 0.25), REF1 and HMP (R2 = 0.23) and finally REF2 and HMP (R2 = 0.27).
Conclusion: Comparison between the three biometric methods and the refractive results 1 day and 6 weeks after cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens shows that the mean values obtained from the three biometric methods are lower than the postoperative refraction. Calculations using the Zeiss IOL-Master and the Allergan Humphrey Ultrasonic Biometer are closer to patient´s postoperative refraction than calculations using the Biovision Echograph. Comparing the coefficients of determination the IOL-Master is the method with the highest accuracy.
