Multimedia-documents as means for information exchange and for further education in the diagnostic region (of Ophthalmology)

Roth E. H., Ludwig H.

Institut für Physiologische Optik, Düsseldorf

Background: The classical media for information exchange and for further education, as printmedia, audio and movie or video are based on different technological platforms. Scientific Results are mostly published in lectures or papers. Findings on patients are exchanged by notes mainly. In special cases film media are used. State of the art multimedia-PCs enable us to use all these different media on one platform.
Methods: On the side of the author PC CD burner and scanner as well as video and audio equipment must be added. For postproduction besides the common wordprocession and graphic programs, imageprocessing, animation and videocutting programs are necessary. The different sources are gathered under the use of HTML. The user just needs a PC with CD drive and a standard browser and perhaps a connector for online use.
Results: Examples for further education developed by us are and a "Multimedia Program for Learning Retinoscopy", and a CD on the subject "Aspherical Intraocular lenses" with 2 videos and some papers. An example from the diagnostic region is a CD with film sequences on a patient with an unclear neuroophthalmological deficit. The CD was sent to several experts for their opinion on this case.
Discussion: The gathering of the multiple media for publication like text, audio, grafics and film on one platform (multimedia-PC, CD/DVD) simplifies the information flow a lot. The common use and connection of the PCs enable a publication of various subjects. Tailored by HTML there is an individual and rational access with standardbrowsers and the possible online or offline publication. In the scientific area with high rates of publication and in the diagnostic region with a demand for an aimed information access this approach is a useful tool.
