Review on keratoprosthesis research, Experiments on the Aachen type keratoprosthesis

Schrage N., Langefeld S., von Fischern T., Kompa S., Drechsler H.

Universitätsklinikum der RWTH Aachen, Augenklinik

Reconstruction of a clear cornea is a major obstacle in chronic inflammatory diseases of the anterior segment such as pemphigoid, Stevens Johnson Syndrome, eye burns and chronic hypotony Syndrome, requiring long term silicone oil endotamponade. In cases where corneal transplantation is not successful surgery with keratoprotheses offers a possibility to regain some visual acuity and to stabilise the integrity of the eye The common aim in evolution of keratoprotheses is to develop an artificial cornea. By means of new techniques such as "Tissue engineering" this horizon seem to open as real replacement of corneal transplants by regrowing corneas. The question rises whether keratoprothesis development is a contemporary tool of rehabilitation. Do we need in future the polymeric keratoprstheses? Which risks have the current keratoprostheses and what can we expect as surgical perspectives within the near future? Starting from own experiments and in comparison to other researchers we offer an actual survey of keratoprosthesis development.
