Objective: To compare the results of color-vision-testing with the colorarrangement- test Roth 28-hue (E) desaturated influenced by repeating sequence and age of the patients.
Methods: Sixty-five patients (group 1: n = 35, 20-39 years; group 2: n = 30; 40-59 years) were included. Exclusion criteria were systemic and ophthalmological diseases. Besides the ophthalmological examinations (visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure, slit lamp and fundus examination) color-vision was tested by the color-arrangement-test Roth 28-hue (E) desaturated monocularly under standard conditions: The background used was black cardboard, illuminated by two Osram fluorescent lamps (L36W/12LDL Daylight) providing 2000 lux at the test table. Every patient had to repeat this color-vision-test at different times (T0-T4) on an average of 5, 15, 32 and 189 days.
Results: Ophthalmological examinations in both groups were without pathological findings. The results of the color-arrangement-test Roth 28- hue (E) desaturated in group 1 and 2 were different. The mean error score in group 1 was invariable from T1 (first repetition after 5 days) and in group 2 from T2 (second repetition after 15 days). In group 2 the mean error score increased again at T4 (fourth repetition after 189 days). No statistical significant difference was found between the measurement of the right or left eye.
Conclusion: The results of the color-arrangement-test Roth 28-hue (E) desaturated depend on the repetition sequence. Patients younger than 40 years need only one repetition and patients older than 40 years need two repetitions to obtain reliable results. In addition, patients older than 40 years need shorter distances between the examinations.
