Visual and refractive outcome of wavefront guided Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)

Spandau U. H. M., Knorz M. C.

Universitätsklinkum Mannheim

Objective: To determine the visual and refractive outcome of wavefrontguided laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) to correct myopic astigmatism.
Patients and methods: This prospective and randomized study comprised 30 eyes of 15 patients. Each patient received randomized a planoscan (standard ablation) and an aberrometer treatment. The mean preoperative spherical refraction was -4.0 D ± 0.9 D with a cylinder of -1.2 D ± 0.4 D. Wavefront analysis was performed with the Zywave aberrometer (Bausch & Lomb). A scanning spot laser (Technolas 217Z) with an eyetracker of 120 Hz was used. VA was determined with ETDRS charts with maximal one mistake per line.
Results: At 3 months, 66% of aberrometer and 44% of planoscan treated eyes were within an emmetropia of ± 0,5 D, and 86% of aberrometer and 100% of planoscan treated eyes were within ± 1 D. Uncorrected VA (UCVA) was 20/20 or more in 66% of aberrometer and 60% of planoscan treated eyes. Supernormal vision of 20/10 was achieved in 14% of aberrometer and in 6% of planoscan treated eyes. Finally, 26% of aberrometer and 14% of planoscan treated eyes had a postoperative increase in UCVA of more than 1 line.
Conclusions: LASIK treatments based on Zywave aberrometer showed a high efficacy and reliability and visual and refractive outcome was better than the planoscan method.
