Treatment of retinal detachment in morning glory syndrome

Universität Leipzig, Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde, Liebigstr. 10- 14, 04103 Leipzig

Background: The morning glory syndrome is a rare condition characterised by a congenital optic disc coloboma. A morning glory optic disc is often associated with retinal detachment. The defect in the optic disc provides a communication for fluid between the subretinal and the vitreous cavity.
Casuistic: A 31-year-old woman who presented to our clinic complained about a decreased visual acuity for two months on the right amblyopic eye. The clinical examination showed a morning glory optic disc and a retinal detachment of the posterior pole. The visual acuity was 1/20. No retinal breaks were identified. The left eye was normal. Other ocular or systemic anomalies could not be found. We performed a pars plana vitrectomy with gas injection. Postoperative the retina was attached and the visual acuity reached 0,1. The course was documented by ophthalmic photography and optical coherence tomography.
Conclusion: The morning-glory-associated retinal detachment can be treated with pars plana vitrectomy and gas tamponade.
