Correlation between retrobulbar color Doppler imaging and laser Doppler flowmetry in the choroid or the optic nerve head of patients with primary open angle glaucoma

Vogten H., Orgül S., Gugleta K., Flammer J.

University Eye Clinic Basel

Background: Evaluation of the relavance of retrobulbar blood flow velocity measurements for blood flow in optic nerve head or the choroid in glaucoma.
Patients and Methods: Blood flow velocity in the central retinal artery and in the optic nerve head and the choroid were measured in 78 primary openangle glaucoma patients by means of color Doppler imaging and laser Doppler flowmetry respectively. The results obtained with both methods were correlated seperately for each eye by means of parametric and nonparametric tests.
Study design: Prospective clinical study.
Results: In both eyes, neither the parametric nor the non-parametric tests showed a statistically significant correlation between the blood flow velocity in the central retinal artery and in the capillaries of the optic nerve head or the choroid.
Conclusion: Although the vascular bed assessed in optic nerve head and choroid laser Doppler flowmetry is supplied from the central retinal artery, no conclusions can be driven from color Doppler imaging measurements for optic nerve head or choroidal blood flow in most glaucoma patients.
