Calculation of the Numerical Eccentricity of the Cornea

Background: Until now there is no suitable method available to calculate the numerical eccentricity of the cornea exactly, because it is different in different meridians. Averaging is mathematically wrong.
Method: Videokeratoscopic recordings are taken using the technomed™ CScan. From these raw data arithmetic means of the curvation radii are calculated for constant distances from the optical axis. For this one-dimensional curve vertex and numerical eccentricity are calculated by least square fit. To objectivize the accuracy of the obtained model cornea, the model cornea is compared with to the accuracy of the reproducibility . Five eyes are being measured and analyzed three times each.
Results: The reproducibility error is larger than the difference between model and original data.
Conclusion: The proposed method allows a unique determination of the numerical eccentricity of the optical part of the cornea. This can be used for further customized refractive surgery.
