Shareware-simulation of ocular motility: The number of downloads in relation to the methods of publication

Wassill K. H., Kowarsch T.

Department of Ophthalmology, Friedrichstr. 18, D-35392 Gießen

Introduction: Hundred downloads of a simulation of Listling's Plane (http://www.med.uni-giessen.de/agma/listing) per week show, that a threedimensional simulation may improve the understanding of ocular motility. Especially for children the fixation of an object is difficult. So a need was seen to develop an extended and binocular programme named Virtual Strabismus. A Shareware version may be downloaded at http://www.med.uni-giessen.de/agma/schielpat. It simulates cover an uncover test, fixational uptake saccades and pursuit movements in a tropia and phoria modus.
Methods: The shareware of the programme Virtual Strabismus is available since April 2001. The means for publication of the shareware were: - a European ophthalmological journal, - a contribution in an internet news group and - a scientific meeting for orthoptists
Results: The number of downloads will be demonstrated like the structure of the user group. The vast increase of downloads after the note in the news group shows, that printed media may be supported by threedimensional simulations.
Conclusion: Educational progresses in the third dimension may be achieved with the help of the web. News groups are an ideal platform for the distribution of public shareware.
