Intoduction: Phakic intraocular lenses are increasingly implanted to correct higher degrees of myopia. In this study we compared the subjective and estimated refraction of three different phakic lenses (Nuvita: anterior chamber PIOL, Artisan: iris claw PIOL, Staar-ICL: posterior chamber PIOL).
Patients and methods: In fourty-two eyes of 24 patients a phakic IOL was implaned by one expierenced refractive surgeon. Corneal astigmatism was influenced either by the incision or with limbal relaxing incisions (LRI). Preoperative refraction in the NuVita-Group (n=8) was between -6.50 to - 19.00 D (mean spherical equivalent (SE) -13.11 D), in the Artisan-Group (n=17) between -6.50 and -27.00 D (mean SE -12.68 D), in the ICL-Group (n=17) between -9.00 to -21.00 D (mean SE -13.4 D). Ophthalmological examinations were performed before, one week and one month after surgery in all patients.
Results: After one week (one month) the SE in the Nuvita-Group was -0.45 D ±0.69 (-0.53 D ±0.74), in the Artisan-Group +0.01 D ±0.52 (-0.34 D ±0.44) and in the ICL-Group -0.84 D ±1.07 (-0.76 D ±1.53).
Conclusion: One week after implantation refraction was stable. The postoperative spherical equivalent in the Nuvita- and Artisan-Group was ±0.5 D of emmetropia (SD <0.75). In the ICL-Group an undercorrection of more than 0.75 D (SD >1.00) from the estimated refraction could be documented.
