Lasertherapy of capillary retinal haemangiomas

Zintl S., Voigt U., Strobel J.

Universitäts-Augenklinik, Bachstrasse 18, 07740 Jena

Objective: Capillary angiomas of the retina (Angiomatosis retinae or Hippel-disease) are associated with other generaly diseases in nearly 25% (Hippel-Lindau-Syndrome). Retinal haemangiomas are the most frequent manifestation of the Hippel-Lindau-Syndrome. Complications of these angiomas are vitreous haemorrhage, exsudation and retinal detachment. The aim of our study was to find out, whether an early lasertreatment can prevent such complications.
Methods: We report 6 eyes of 4 patients with an age range from 25 to 59 years (3 women, 1 man). All patients have been examined in our hospital from february 2001 for first manifestation of retinal angiomas. In every case flourescinangiography and photodocumentation was carried out. The treatment was coagulation with argon-laser (spotsize: 100-200 µm, energy: 300-900 mW, time 200 ms).
Results: In four eyes the angiomas disappeared after the first laser treatment. In two eyes with larger angiomas a second and third laser treatment was necessary up to now. Except a small bleeding in two eyes no complications were observed.
Conclusions: Retinal angiomas can be treated with lasercoagulation. In small angiomas one lasersession is sufficient. In larger angiomas more than one treatment is necessary. Complications are rare. Therefore closemeshed clinical examinations of the patients are necessary.
