80 % der Blindheit weltweit könnten durch präventive und therapeutische Maßnahmen beseitigt werden. Derzeit leben 50 Mio. Blinde und über 100 Mio. Sehbehinderte auf unserem Globus, die Blindheitsrate nimmt jährlich um 1 bis 2 Mio. zu. Diese Fakten haben die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO), die International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), Hilfsorganisationen (NGO's), Augenärzte und Politiker dazu geführt, 1999 das Programm Vision 2020, die "Global Initiative for the Elimination of Avoidable Blindeness by the Year 2020" ins Leben zu rufen. Dieses Programm hat drei wesentliche Komponenten: Bekämpfung der Blindheit durch die wichtigsten Erblindungsursachen: Katarakt, Trachom, Onchozerkose, Erblindung bei Kindern, Glaukom, diabetische Retinopathie Ausbildung und Weiterbildung von Augenärzte und Hilfspersonal Verbesserung der Infrastruktur für augenmedizinische Programme, d.h. Bau von Augenkliniken und deren Ausstattung, Beschaffung von Operationsinstrumenten, Augenmedikamenten, Nahtmaterial, Intraokularlinsen usw. Das Programm Vision 2020 eröffnet die Möglichkeit, in einer konzentrierten Aktion aller Beteiligten Blindheit zu bekämpfen. Das Symposium Vision 2020 bei der DOG wird auf der einen Seite das Ausmaß und die Ursachen von Blindheit in der Welt darstellen, auf der anderen Seite Wege aufzeigen, wie die DOG, deutsche Augenkliniken und deutsche Augenärzte einen Beitrag zur Blindheitsbekämpfung leisten können.

80 % of the world's blindness could be eradicated through preventative and therapeutic meas-ures. At present, 50 Mio. blind people and over 100 Mio. visually impaired people are living on this planet and the annual rate increases by 1 - 2 Mio. Education and updates for ophthalmologists and other personnel. Improving the infrastructure for medical programs which means building and supplying Eye clinics, obtaining surgical equipment, medication, sutures, intraocular lenses etc. The program Vision 2020 is an opportunity for a concentrated fight against blindness. The Symposium 2020 will on the one hand describe the extent and the causes of blindness in the World, on the other hand it will show ways in which the DOG, German eye clinics and German ophthalmologists can contribute in the fight against blindness.
