Purpose: To determine the factor, by which the laser power in PDT or TTT has to be increased to compensate for scattering losses in cataract lenses.
Method: The macular fundus reflection was measured in 20 patients (mean age: 71.1±6.7 years) at PDT- and TTT-specific wavelengths (667 nm, 689 nm, and 810 nm) before and after cataract extraction and intra-ocular lens implantation. The laser power enhancement, necessary in case of cataract, was calculated from the ratio of the pre- and postoperative measurements.
Results: Compared to the laser dosage for eyes with clear media, an enhancement of the laser power by 1.25 would be necessary in order to apply the same dose of radiation to the maculae of the cataract eyes in this investigation. However, the inter-individual differences were large (SD=0.25).
