Racemous Hemangioma in a 14-Year-old Female Patient

Schneider M., Hörle S.,
Philipps-Universität Marburg, Medizinisches Zentrum für Augenheilkunde (Marburg)

Purpose: To report a very rare case of racemous hemangioma
Method: Observational case report.
Results: A 14 year-old female patient presented with loss of visual function of the right eye to our outpatient clinic. Visual acuity of the right eye was 20/63, left eye 20/20. The retinal vessels of the complete central fundus were exceedingly dilated. A cranial computed tomography was performed, which did not reveal any further manifestations of the hemangioma.
Conclusions: Racemous hemangioma is a rare, mostly unilateral arterial-venous malformation. Histopathological characteristics are a direct communication between arteries and venules. The capillary bed is missing. Although bleedings and further growth of the hemangioma occur rarely, some associations have to be excluded: ipsilateral lesions of the brain stem, chiasma and the skull are possible. These may lead to intracranial bleeding or epilepsy. In conclusion neuroradiologic imaging is essential in the diagnosis of a racemous hemangioma.
