First Experiences with Neuro-navigation in Ophthalmology Shown on a Hemangioma of the Orbit

Purpose: Neuronavigation is an established method in neurosurgery for intraoperative tumour detecting. Our interest was to enlarge the spectrum of application possibilities in ophthalmology with the treatment of a hemangioma in the orbit.
Method: This casereport will describe the application of the navigation system in the operation of a hemangioma of the orbit.
Results: The result is, that neurosurgery is the main application of neuronavigation. The costs are high and it is not more agreeable for the patient than conventional operating methods.
Conclusions: In contrast to the results in neurosurgery we cannot find any advantages for plastic surgery. On the other hand centres for neurosurgery and ophthalmology should cooperate intensively for the establishment of new techniques and they should publish and discuss their results to find new applications with innovative instruments.
