Purpose: The electronic patient record (EPR) is becoming more and more important regarding the increasing need of communication between hospital and physician’s office and within organised physician networks. The requirements and characteristics of the data traffic in the field of ophthalmology are to be stated here.
Method: the security and privacy requirements have to be assured before transmitting patient related data. For this purpose different encoding procedures are technically available. Furthermore the patient should be informed about the aim of transmission, the receiving party and the security of the connection.
Results: One of the safest procedures of data exchange using the so called open networks (like Internet) is the transmission using virtual private networks (VPN). The application of the encoding technology within VPNs increases the security of the transmission, particularly if hardware bound keys are used here.
Conclusions: The data communication using open networks offers sufficient security and privacy with the application of virtual private networks in combination with hardware bound encoding technologies. However the patient must be informed about the transmission of his data and its risks sufficiently an his agreement should be assured.
