Individual Blink rate During VDT Use

Purpose: By changing patterns of working conditions with increasing numbers of video display terminals (VDT) many persons report about dry eye symptoms after prolonged VDT use. However, there is limited knowledge about the individual behavior of blinking under different conditions.
Method: We developed a new system for recording and analysing the frequency of blinking under different conditions. To study the individual behavior of blinking, we evalueted in 45 healthy volunteers frequency of blinking over 10 minutes work at a video display terminal (with and without corneal anesthesia) and under relaxed conditions.
Results: 45 volunteers (25 female, 20 male) were evaluated during work at a VDT with and without corneal anesthesia and under relaxed conditions. There was a significant decrease of blinking during work at the VDT (mean 50.5 ± 41.4) compared to relaxed conditions (161.0 ± 143.0) (p<0.0001). Corneal anesthesia further reduced the frequency of blinking (27.4 ± 28.4) (p<0.0001). However, there was a strong individual variation. Pathological break-up time tended to be associated with an increased rate of blinking and inhomogeneous pattern of blinking.
Conclusions: Our study indicate that the use of video display terminals is associated with a marked decrease of blinking. However, there are strong interindividual differences in the behavior of blinking. Therefore, further studies should be adressed to obtain more information concerning these different pattern of blinking and related enviromental conditions.
