Blepharoplasty with the CO2-Laser

Background: Meanwhile blepharoplasty is carried out not merely on the basis of medical indications but more and more for cosmetical reasons. Hence innovative techniques with the use of lasers play an increasing role in lid surgery.
Method: The procedure of conventional blepharoplasty and that of blepharoplasty with the CO2-laser are compared.
Results: The CO2-laser carries out the excision and coagulation simultaneously and hence induces much less bleeding during surgery. Thus an excellent overview of the anatomical structures is achieved. Additionally, the results after CO2-laser blepharoplasty show reduced postoperative haematoma . Limitations of the CO2-laser are the relatively high costs of the device and a not very flexible handpiece.
Conclusion: The use of the CO2-lasers in blepharoplasty reduces the time required for surgery, reduces bleeding and thus provides a good overview of anatomical structures and shows good cosmetical results.
