Risks of Autologous Fat Injection - Hemiparesis and One-eye Blindness

A 40 year old woman suffered right eye blindness and hemiparesis immediately after autologous fat injection for soft tissue augmentation in the glabella region. This condition was caused by an open foramen ovale with occlusion of the central retinal artery and the right A. cerebri media within seconds after fat injection. The typical funduscopic and fluorescencangiographic findings of a retinal fat emboly are demonstrated. Indications for autologous fat injection have to be good considered being aware of this rare but important risc.
