Autologous Serum for Resistant Epithelial Defects and Non-infectious Corneal Ulsers Treatment

Aim: Study of autologous serum (AS) for resistant epithelial defects and noninfectious corneal ulsers treatment efficacy. Materials and methods. 26 patients (33 eyes) were under our observation from october 2001 till april 2002. They were 23-74 years old (M=44,87±3,19). AS was used for instillations in patients with recurrent erosions (n=1), epithelisation disturbance in herpetic keratitis (n=3 ), slow epithelisation after lamellar keratoplasty (n=8), neurotrophic ulsers (n=5), pheumatoid ulsers (n=2 ), Sicca syndrome (n=14). Patients autoblood was centrifugated for 10 minutes by 4000 g\ min. All of the patients received local and common therapy according to their disease.
Results: AS application was used for 4-21 day (M=10,9±0,9). Healing of corneal epithelial defects took 8,8±0,9 days. We observed epithelisation in 28 eyes (84, 8%). Significant subjective improvement was noted by 11 of 14 persons with Sicca syndrome. Partial blepharorrhaphia was performed in 4 patients with trophical ulsers and lagophthalm. Amnion membrane transplantation was performed in 2 cases. Biological covering (by Puchkovskaya) was performed in 2 cases. We observed recurrence of epithelial erosion in 2 cases in 3 months after finishing of AS treatment. We performed keratoplasty in 2 patients with reumathoidal artritis. There were not complacations in patients with As treatment.
Conclusions: Autologous serum application is effective additional method for resistant epithelial defects and noninfectious corneal ulsers treatment.
