Academician Nadezhda A. Puchkovskaya (1908-2001). One Year after Death 1Marishev Y., 2Droshina G. I.,
May 15 th,2002 - one year after death of outstanding ukrainian scientist, extraordinary women-ophthalmologist, academician N. A. Puchkovskaya. She lived almost century during monarchy, revolution of 1917, Civil war, soviet era and in new Ukraine. She was born in doctors family in Russia and educated at Kiev Medical Institute in 1930. Her father Alexander M. Puchkovskiy was professor otolaringologist at Kiev Medical Institute. In 1946 Academician Vladimir P. Filatov invited her to work at the Experimental Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy after named Filatov. In 1956 she became the director of the Institute after Filatovs death and all his ideas were preserved, developed and further increased by her till 1985. Her innovations were: pathogenesis studing and new methods of treatment eye burns and their seguelae; new types of keratoplasty (peripheral transplantation of the cornea), biological covering by Puchkovskaya; keratoprosthesis. She published more 300 scientific papers and 12 books. Dr. Puchkovskaya prepared 53 researchers (26 Doctors and 27 Candidates of Medical Sciences). She was a member of Academy of Medical Sciences of USSR, member of National Academy of Sciences and of Academy of Medical Sciences of the Ukraine, Charter member of Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, Honorary member of Ophthalmological Societies of Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany (DDR). 1957 to 1998 Dr. Puchkovskaya was Editor of Oftalmologicheskiy Zhurnal (founded by Filatov in 1946). She was Chairman of Ukrainian Ophthalmological Society from 1968 to 1996. Dr. Puchkovskaya loved city, where she lived 60 years and she was Honorary citizen of Odessa. |
