Evaluation of Anterior Chamber Depth and Irido-corneal Angle with the Orbscan II Slit Scanning System

Purpose: The Orbscan slit scanning system II was used to evaluate anterior chamber depth and iridocorneal angle in normal eyes.
Methods: 408 patients were included and devided into 7 age groups: 10-19 years (n=34; m:f=11:23), 20-29 years (n=93; m:f=53:40), 30-39 years (n=74; m:f=51:23), 40-49 years (n=68; m:f=46:22), 50-59 years (n=63; m:f=38:25), 60-69 years (n=53; m:f=33:20), 70-79 years (n=23; m:f=18:5). Based on Orbscan II slit scanning system the following parameters were assessed two times a day: anterior chamber depth and iridocorneal angle in 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°, 225°, 270°, 315°. For calculating the norm values mean value and standard deviation of all parameters were provided. Statistical analysis was performed by t-test.
Results: The difference in anterior chamber depth and iridocorneal angle at 0°, 90°, 120°, 135°, 180°, 225°, 270° between male and female was statistically significant (p<0.01). Furthermore in the group of males the anterior chamber depth and iridocorneal angle at 0°, 45°, 90°, 270° and 315° showed a significant age related difference (p<0.01). There was also a significant age related difference in anterior chamber depth and iridocorneal angle at 45° and 90° in the group of females (p<0.01). No differences between the first and second measurement of all parameters were noted (r>0.7; p=0.000).
Conclusions: The Orbscan slit scanning system II can provide age and sex related reference datas of anterior chamber depth and iridocorneal angle from normal eyes. These norm values are useful for comparison with e.g. glaucoma eyes.
