Introduction: In rabbits different hydrofluorocarbon liquids showed promising properties as heavy vitreous substitutes in the treatment of inferior retinal pathologies. The results of a clinical pilot study using O62 (monomer), a partially fluorinated alcane, are presented.
Patients and Methods: O62 was evaluated as a longterm tamponade in 10 patients with complicated retinal detachment with PVR stage B and C in the inferior quadrants.
Results: O62 offered an adequate tamponade and initial reattachment of the inferior retina in all patients and seemed to reduce the number of retinectomies. O62 showed varying dispersion and showed severe emulsification after 4-6 weeks tamponade, however no increase of IOP was observed. Only small precipitate formation was seen. In 2/10 patients 062 seemed to induce optic atrophy.
Conclusions: O62 may be a useful shortterm tamponadeThe tamponade should be limited to a few weeks due to unpredictable emulsification and ist use should be restricted to contolled clinical trials due to unclear optic nerve toxicity.
