Background: Presentation of an implantation technique. Analysis of exactness of the obtained correction of refractive follow-up as well as the endothelial cell counts, IOP and lens during a postoperative course up to 3 years.
Method: In 35 eyes toric Artisan lenses were implanted for corrections of hyperop and myop astigmatisms of 3-8 D. Initial fixation of the axes on the iris using the Green Laser and a coinciding Tabo scheme. All lenses were implanted in the Closed System, i.e. fixation of the lens after wound closure with the help of a spreader over the laser spots.
Results: Exactness of correction for the sphere is + 0.5, for the cylinder + 0.75 D. All values are constant after a few days. Loss of endothelial cell count was not observed. IOP is in the range 22-28 mm Hg within the first days. There was one case with a persisting IOP in the same range that needed medication. Other complications, such as lens opacifications or retinal detachments were not observed.
Conclusions: Toric Artisan lenses are a safe and effective method for correction for both hyperopic and myopic cylinders. Marking of the axes on the iris and fixation of the lens over the marks are prerequisites of reproducible results.
