The International Character of the German Society of Ophthalmology ("DOG") - a Historical View

Herde J.,
Martin-Luther-Universität, Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde (Halle/Saale)

Introduction: The present profile of the DOG wouldn´t be understood without looking back to the 145 years of history of this society. It´s a challenge to us, on the occasion of the 100th conference of the DOG, to acknowledge the history of the oldest medical society as part of the international science.
Content: From the beginning the founder of the society A.v. Gräfe ( * 22th of may 1828, + 20th july 1870) gave to the DOG an international state, thanks to his open-minded education and a two years study trip abroad. Already in 1857 F. v. Arlt and Fr. Horner have been dedicated members. One year later they were joined by C. Donders. The date of the official foundation of the society of Ophthalmology of Heidelberg (Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft Heidelberg) was at the 5th of september 1863. It took place by the appointment of an international committee. It had at first six, and later on eight official members. Around 50 years later the official name was changed into "DOG" ("German" instead of "Heidelberger" society). Corresponding to the mind of it´s founder, the society did not care about any national boarders. Everyone was welcome, and still is welcome, who supports the science. To get possibility taking part in international congresses of ophthalmology the meetings in Heidelberg were declinined in this years. The DOG acknowledged anniversaries of foreign societies and universities. There has been a busy exchange of minutes with foreign medical societies. The prizes of the DOG were given to scientists all over the world, without looking for their nationalities. v. Gräfe showed his respect for one of his best friends, named J. Jacobsen, also a known fighter for Ophthalmology in Prussian, making him his successor. The international connection of the DOG is expressed in the cooperation in international and european bodys of experts. Also it is shown in the growing international exchange of knowledge and collaborators (concerning science). The DOG also supports projects in developing countries. Some of those bodys are dealing with regulations and laws, integrating international states of ophthalmology.
Conclusion: The German Society of Ophthalmology (Deutsche Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft, DOG) is still working in the open-minded sense of it´s founder A. v. Gräfe, being an international society of science.
