Purpose: To prevent the risk of infection by Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease new standards for sterilisation were published. These methods are more damaging the instruments. Examinations show the degree of attrition of the surface of the instruments in dependence on the number of sterilisation processes.
Method: A trephine, a corneal scissors and a spatula were examined. The instruments were tested for the degree of attrition after the DIN-regulations for medical instruments (a test for cutting and a test for oxidation). These tests were performed before the first sterilisation cycle and after 10, 15, 25 and 35 cycles of special Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease – sterilisation.
Results: The degree of attrition correlated with the number of sterilisation cycles. The oxidation test of the trephine was positive after ten cycles. A little bit later (after 15 cycles) the test of the corneal scissors was positive, too.
Conclusions: For reasons of attrition of the instruments in this short time the possibility of using disposable instruments should kept in mind. An additional advantage would be the exclusion of infection with Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease by this way.
