Purpose: Pterygium is a common problem in the Middle East. This study was done to compare between both techniques of pterygium removal as regards safety, complications and recurrence rate.
Methods: 20 eyes with primary pterygium had their pterygia removed by avulsion and rotating conjunctival flap while another set of 20 eyes had their pterygia removed by excision and bare sclera technique. The cases were followed up for detection of recurrences.
Results: No serious complications were encountered by either method of pterygium removal. However, five cases of the group of excision and bare sclera recurred (25%) compared to only one case (5%) from the other group.
Conclusions: Removal of pterygium by avulsion and rotating conjunctival flap seems to be easier and safer and has a lower rate of recurrence than its removal by excision and bare sclera technique.
