Purpose: To present the results of a series of 70 cases with f CNV related to AMD were subretinal membrane excision was combined with simultaneous transplantation of autologous RPE cells.
Material and Methods: 70 eyes of 68 patients with AMD and fCNV underwent subretinal surgery with simultaneous transplantation of autologous RPE cells, a method already described in the pilot study. Examinations were performed in 3 months intervals and included best corrected visual acuity for far and near, fluorescein- and indocyaningreen -angiografie, multifokale elekroretinografie (mERG) and optical coherence tomographiy (OCT). Seven eyes, were only membrane excision was performed, served as controls.
Results: After a medium observation time in 64 cases of 18 months (6-36 months) visual improvement of 2 or more lines was found in the cases with transplantation ( 57) in 43.8.% (25 /57), remained unchanged (±1 line) in 48.7% (38/57) and decreased 2lines or ore in 7.5%(4/57). Multifokal ERGs showed the highest medium potential after 3 months and remained higher than the preoperative values thereafter. A recurrent membrane growth was observed in 2 eyes (4%) , one after 6 months one after 2 years.
Conclusions: These results suggest that transplantation of autologous RPE might be a treatment option for patients with fCNV related to AMD. Recurrent membranes were observed rarely.
