Dorn V., Dugacki V.,
Klinika Za Ocne Bolestri Rebro, Kabinet Za Ortoptiku (Zagreb)

Purpose: The first professionally trained ophthalmologists in Croatia, until founding of Medical faculty in Zagreb (1917) and University Eye Clinic (1923), studied at the universities in Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Several of them a part of their specialistic education acquired at famous ophthalmologists in Germany. During the time of professional training they realized professional contacts with colleagues ophthalmologists, later it was enlarged at professional meetings. Finally this was reflected in the membership of the oldest professional ophthalmological society – in German Society of Ophthalmology.
Methods: Biographies of the first croatian ophthalmologists, in particular of prominent representatives of branch, their appearence abroad, published works and reports, annual reports, summaries in reference books etc. are material and source for this work.
Results: In the course of the 20th c. more croatian ophthalmologists were the members of DOG. Let us mention the first professionally trained ophthamologist Dr. V. Lušic-Matkovic, the founder of the first University Department of Ophthalmology in Croatia Prof. Dr. A. Botteri and his succesor in professorial chair Prof. Dr. Z. Pavišic. The founders and directors of ophthalmology departments were Prof. Dr. Z. Nižetic, Prof. Dr. D. Šakic, Dr. J. Štajduhar and Dr. S. Juretic. In the last decade of the 20th c. several prominent croatian ophthalmologists are the members of DOG, too.
Conclusions: Professional training of Croatian doctors at well-known ophthalmologic centers in Central Europe, knowledge transfer, organisation of eye clinics and departments of ophthalmology according to Central-European pattern, participation at professional meetings and congresses, as well as personal contacts make Croatian ophthalmology a part of traditional Central-European ophthalmology. But, the transfer of knowledge went in the opposite direction too. Contributions of croatian ophthalmologists to the general ophthalmologic profession and science are also emphasized here.
