Surgical Treatment of Pediatric Cataracts using an Anterior Segment Approach

The treatment of pediatric cataracts has been advanced with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. However, the problems of IOL biocompatibility, ongoing change in refraction due to eye growth and the high rate of posterior visual axis opacification have to be considered. The author will discuss pediatric IOL implantation using an anterior segment approach concerning IOL biocompatibility, visual development and refractive changes. The surgical methods to reduce visual axis opacification in the high proliferating young eyes are discussed.
