Multifocal techniques in ophthalmological diagnostics

Bach M.,
Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Augenklinik, Elektrophysiologisches Labor (Freiburg)

The “multifocal recording technique” is a sophisticated stimulus and analysis procedure which has revolutionized the electrophysiological analysis of retinal function. It allows to record the electroretinogram from many retinal regions simultaneously with a single electrode. The result is a retinal functional map, which can be correlated with the visual field.
The talk aims to develop an intuitive understanding of the multifocal principle: How is it possible to record a map with one single electrode? Clinical applications of the standardized multifocal electroretinogram, for instance in Stargardt's, will be demonstrated. The multifocal VEP could be used as objective perimetry, but is not sufficiently developed for clinical routine. Finally, the versatility of the multifocal technique will be demonstrated by an objective campimetry which is based on multifocal pupillometry.
