Antigen Presenting Cells (APC)

Ignatius R.,
Freie Universität Berlin, Klinikum Benjamin Franklin, Institut für Infektionsimmunologie (Berlin)

The rejection of transplanted organs is mediated by specific T-lymphocytes that have previously been stimulated by antigen-presenting cells through the presentation of donor antigens together with costimulatory signals. The latter cell population gains thereby significant impact on the induction of the immune responses leading to transplant rejection. Dendritic cells are specialised on the stimulation of naive T-lymphocytes. Therefore, first concepts proposed that emigrating donor dendritic cells were responsible for the induction of transplant rejection. Newer results now indicate that also dendritic cells from the recipient can stimulate rejection. The presentation will give an overview on the roles of dendritic cells in organ rejection and will discuss ways to interfere with their functions.
