Quality of Life Assessment - How to Evaluate Outcome after Therapeutic Interventions for AMD?

Rubin G. S.,
Institute of Ophthalmology (London)

Advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains the leading cause of severe visual impairment in Europe and North America. In recent years we have seen the introduction of several new therapeutic interventions for AMD including photodynamic therapy, external beam radiotherapy, nutritional supplements, and retinal translocation. It is now well recognized that visual acuity alone does not provide an adequate characterization of the potential benefits and risks of treatment. Patient-based outcomes, especially quality of life (QoL) questionnaires, have become an increasingly important part of the therapeutic evaluation process. QoL data complement other forms of patient-based outcomes assessment such as direct observation of task performance. The role of QoL assessment and the standards for selecting appropriate QoL instruments will be discussed. Particular attention will be paid to measurement issues and the interpretation of QoL outcomes.
