Satisfaction of Patients after Photorefractive Surgery

Purpose: To asses outcome of refractive surgery, objective standards as refraction, postoperative visual acuity, glare sensitiveness and halo are used. For patients it is also of importance how they perceive subjective the changes and how these perception correlate to their expectations, they had before surgery.
Method: 46 patients (age 21-54 years) with a total of 82 eyes (15 eyes LASIK, 67 eyes PRK) were enrolled in the study. 33 eyes had myopia, 4 eyes hyperopia, 34 eyes myopic astigmatism and 11 eyes hyperopic astigmatism. Using a special questionnaire the patients were asked about the surgical management, their expectations and visual disorders shortly before, three months and 12 months after the intervention.
Results: Based on objective dates, we revealed the following changes after 12 months of surgery: deviation of the refractive goal 0.5 diopters (spherical equivalent), best corrected visual acuity before surgery mean 1.12, post surgery uncorrected visual acuity 0.91, best corrected visual acuity 1.34. Mean contrast steps on the mesoptometer with glare increased from 6 to 6.3.
