Surgery for Primary Basal Cell Carcinoma (PBCC) Including the Eyelid Margins with Intraoperative Frozen Section Control (IFS): A Comparative Interventional Study with Minimum 5 Years Clinical Follow-up

Purpose: Assess recurrence of primary basal cell carcinoma (PBCC) including the eyelid margins after resection with or without intraoperative frozen section control (IFS).
Method: Review of records of consecutive patients with a histopathological diagnosis of PBCC including the eyelid margins. Patients with a minimum 5 years clinical follow-up treated with (group 1) or without (group 2) IFS were identified. Postoperatively, pertinent paraffin sections were available in all patients.
Results: 165 patients were available for study. There were 145 patients with a minimum 5 years follow-up. Of these, no tumor recurrences were observed using slit-lamp control in group 1 (n=114) compared with 3 (9.7%) in group 2 (n=31) (p=0.003).
Conclusions: Surgery for PBCC including the eyelid margins with IFS and immediate plastic reconstruction as performed in the present study is associated with better long-term cure compared to surgery with clinical control.
