Night Driving: Do Aspheric IOLs Offer Advantages?

Purpose: Following phacoemulsification and implantation of intraocular lenses contrast sensitivity and night driving ability is often reduced.
Method: After implantation of an aspheric intraocular lens we examined following the DOG guidelines contrast and glare sensitivity in 19 eyes.
Results: 53% of the patients fulfilled the DOG contrast sensitivity night driving guidelines. Less than 10% however fulfilled the glare sensitivity guidelines.
Conclusions: Contrast sensitivity is often reduced in older patients or after cataract surgery due to aberrations in the optical system. Aspheric intraocular lenses may help to improve contrast sensitivity.
