Role of Oxidative Stress in the Pathophysiology of Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome

Purpose: Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome is an age-related fibrotic matrix process, which appears to be influenced not only by growth factors such as TGF-ß1 and an proteolytic imbalance between matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors but also by increased cellular and oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to analyse antioxidatixe factors and oxidative stress markers in aqueous humor and serum of patients with and without PEX syndrome. Method: The total antioxidative status, the enzyme activities of catalase and glutathion peroxidase, the concentrations of antioxidative factors (ascorbic acid, ferritin, transferrin, uric acid) as well as the concentration of 8-isoprostaglandin-F2A, a marker of oxidative stress, were analysed using spectrophotometric, fluorometric or chemoluminometric assays or chromatographic methods in aqueous humor and serum samples of 20 patients with PEX syndrome, PEX glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, and cataract, respectively.
