Comparative Study of Serum Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) in Normal Individuals and Senile Cataract Patients

Purpose: Senile cataract is an important public disorder in the world. In every year, millions cases of blindness worldwide result from unoperated cataract.
Method: With regard to the prevalence and enormous economic complications in many countries, in this study plasma ascorbic acid (vitamin C) levels of cataract patients in the males and in the females evaluated and compared with Dinitrophenylhydrazine method by spectrophotometry.
Results: Fifty cataract patients (28 Males and 22 Females) were matched according to age. Statistical analysis revealed a decrease in plasma ascorbic acid for males in comparison to females (P=0.001).
Conclusions: This study proved that plasma vitamin C concentration in the male cataract patients is lower than the female cataract patients. The difference between the males and the females may be related to hormonal differences, and future studies must be done.
