Temporal Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness in Different Glaucoma Stages Measured with Optical Coherence Tomography

Purpose: The mean height of the contour line in the temporal horizontal sector between -4 to -10 degrees determines the standard reference plane of an individual optic disc using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph. This definition is deemed as independent of the stage of glaucomatous optic nerve damage. In this study we investigate the relation of the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness depending to the stage of glaucomatous damage using optical coherence tomography (OCT I) and confocal laser scanning tomography (HRT II).
Method: 18 patients with chronic glaucoma were examined. According to the classification of Jonas, these were 5 eyes with stage I, 5 eyes with stage II, 2 eyes with stage III, 4 eyes with stage IV and 1 eye with stage V optic atrophy and 1 normal control. In all patients HRT II and OCT I examinations were performed according to a standardized protocol.
Results: We found a correlation of the cup/disc area ratio measured with HRT II to the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in the temporal horizontal sector between -4 to -10 degree measured with OCT I of r = -0.58; SD = 0,16; p = 0.01.
Conclusions:
