Results after Anterior Transcutaneous Ptosis Surgery

Purpose: There are numerous surgical techniques for levator aponeurotic repair. The therapy of choice depends on pathogenesis, levator function and previous surgery. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the transcutaneous ptosis surgery concerning functional results, complications and recurrencies.
Method: For the period between 1995 - 2000 the records of 145 patients were evaluated, who had undergone surgery for ptosis at the university eye hospital Würzburg were reviewed out of those 83 patients (108 eyes), (involutional 78, congenital 22, after trauma 4, anophthalmos 2, muscle dystrophy 2), have been evaluated retrospectively. The preoperative palpebral fissure was 5,3mm (involutional), 5.8 mm (congenital), 6.0 mm (after trauma), 6.5 mm (anophthalmos) and 5.5 mm (muscle dystrophy). The mean follow-up period was 5.8 months, the average age 57.0 ±23 years. 54 women and 29 men were treated. 19 patients have had prior surgery. The primarily performed surgical techniques were: levator aponeurotic repair (55), levator resection (49), levator folding (3) and brow suspension (1).
Results: A cure after primary surgery was achieved in 86.1% (93) the recurrence rate 13.9% (13). The postoperative palpebral fissure was 7,9mm (involutional), 8,1mm (congenital), 9.7mm (after trauma), 10mm (anophthalmos) and 8mm (muscle dystrophy).
