Abstract
University partnership Rostock - Kinshasa Guthoff R.1, Kayembe D.2, Hopkins A.3
The German Ophthalmological Society is heading for partnerships of each German University Eye Department with an Eye Department in Third World Countries. Our institution has made a formal decision after travelling through West Africa and having visited various locations. We will co-operate with the University Eye Department of Kinshasa. This academic institution co-operates closely with the church-run St. Josephs Hospital in the center of this city of 7 Mio inhabitants. Both institutions are closely related to a programme of the Christian Blind Mission in Kinshasa coordinated through its center, based in Nairobi. A Rostock student stayed in Kinshasa for 6 months in order to perform a study on the glaucoma incidence in local Bantu populations, examining more than 1,000 patients with modern equipment, including laser-scanning tomography of the optical disc. There is a partnership in eye surgery mainly to stimulate early surgery in congenital cataracts. All contributors are confident that a long-lasting partnership and friendship is going to be established. |
