University partnership Rostock - Kinshasa

The German Ophthalmological Society is heading for partnerships of each German University Eye Department with an Eye Department in Third World Countries. Our institution has made a formal decision after travelling through West Africa and having visited various locations. We will co-operate with the University Eye Department of Kinshasa. This academic institution co-operates closely with the church-run St. Josephs Hospital in the center of this city of 7 Mio inhabitants. Both institutions are closely related to a programme of the Christian Blind Mission in Kinshasa coordinated through its center, based in Nairobi. A Rostock student stayed in Kinshasa for 6 months in order to perform a study on the glaucoma incidence in local Bantu populations, examining more than 1,000 patients with modern equipment, including laser-scanning tomography of the optical disc. There is a partnership in eye surgery mainly to stimulate early surgery in congenital cataracts. All contributors are confident that a long-lasting partnership and friendship is going to be established.
